KCC performance slipping
Kent County Council has held on to its status as
an excellent authority. However, while it retained scores of 4 out of 4
for ambition and prioritisation, it failed to improve its previous
score of 3 out of 4 for achievement.
Its score actually dropped in two out of the five
assessment categories, slipping from a 4 to a 3 for performance
management and capacity.
Mike Eddy, Labour Shadow Leader of KCC, said: “The
Corporate Assessment rightly highlighted the County Council’s
strengths, not least its able and enthusiastic staff, many of whom do
tough jobs under difficult circumstances. But the Audit
Commission sent a very clear message that there are things KCC could do
a lot better."More >>

Tories charge schools for recycling
The Tories on our council have started charging
schools for recycling sacks.
"I'm told that some teachers are taking recyclable
material home to put it out for their domestic doorstep collection. As
if schools and their teachers aren't busy enough!" commented Labour
Group Leader Julia Seath "Others won't be so committed and
their recyclable waste will end up in the landfill tip."
This decision, strongly resisted by Labour, was
made during the preparation of the budget earlier this year.

Food miles don't feed climate change - meat does
That locally-produced, free-range, organic
hamburger might
not be as green as you think.
An analysis of the environmental toll of food
production concludes that transportation is a mere drop in the carbon
bucket. Foods such as beef and dairy make a far deeper impression on a
consumer's carbon footprint. NewScientist

Councils cost less says Hazel
"Households in top-tier Labour council areas will
pay on average £204 less this year than those living in Tory council
areas and £143 less than those in Lib Dem areas.
"And increases have also been kept lower in Labour
areas than in Tory or Lib Dem areas. We believe there's no excuse for
excessive council tax rises - and thanks to Labour's extra investment
in local government, this year's is the lowest increase in council tax
for 14 years and the second lowest increase since council tax began." Detains
