Canterbury Results
Despite the enthusiastic hard work done by Alex and his team of helpers
- especially Nick (Hope you'll soon be feeling fully recovered, Nick)
- we weren't able to buck the national trend. There was a swing to the
Tories of 5.5%, incresing their majority from 2,069 to 7,471.
Despite all
their claims to be able to win the seat, the Lib Dems failed to reach
their 1997 level in the poll and remain in
third place, 3,583 behind Labour.

Turnout was 66.1% compared with 60.9% four years ago.
In Kent only Chris Pond in Gravesham lost his seat. All other Kent MPs
held on. Kent now has 7 Labour MPs; the Liberals have none, their
attempt to decapitate Michael Howard having failed miserably.
Kent County Council
The Tories have strengthened their stranlehold on the county, now
holding 57 of the 84 seats. Labour has 21 and the Lib Dems 6.
Of the Canterbury, Whitstable and Herne Bay Dividions Divisions, the
Tories now hold all but one, the Lib
Dems having Canterbury City South-West.
