Biography
Mel is a teacher in a school for young people with autism, a single mum, a musician, saxophonist and singer-songwriter who performs regularly. A twin; her sister was born with cerebral palsy, whilst she has 50% neuron-congenital hearing loss and wears a hearing aid.
has lived in Canterbury her whole life and was a nurse in local hospitals for over 40 years before retiring. She is active in her trade union, UNISON where she is a member of its’ National Executive Committee.
Locally, Mel serves as the local party’s Women’s Officer before running for council. She has been a school governor and Mental Health Act manager for a local borough in London. She is describes herself as a ‘can do’ person who if something doesn’t seem right, doesn’t just accept it
She was elected to Canterbury City Council in 2019 as a representative for St Stephens ward.
Mel sits on the Canterbury Forum, Standards Committee and Joint Transport Board in addition to full council.
