Labour Club reopens
Having been closed for a couple of weeks following flooding in
Whitstable, and thanks to the hard work of members, the Labour Club is
set to reopen this Friday, 14 Sep. Come along and join the celebrations

Tory Executive rapped over plans for market
Plans to close the popular St Georges street market and move it to Iron
Bar Lane were sent back to be looked at again on 20 Sep.
Their decision had been made without money being made available,
planning permission or necessary traffic regulations being consulted
on. It had not been considered by the Canterbury Area Members' Panel,
was not included in the Corporate Plan, nor had it been included on the

Our Hospitals are getting better
The East Kent Hospitals Annual Report for 2006-7 reveals a reductions
in hospital acquired infections and in waiting times.
MRSA and C. diff cases down and waiting times now meet most

Tories fail on drains and try to blame the
Government!
Local Tory
politicians have tried to claim that recent localised flooding in Kent
was the fault of
the government! The fact is that Tory-controlled KCC's Highways
Service is responsible for maintaining roadside gullies and drains.
The privatised
water companies are responsible for mains drainage and private
landowners are responsible for open ditches. The government through the
Environment Agency is responsible for major river and sea flood
defences.

Labour
calls for better maintenance of drains
Torrential rain caused widespread flooding in Whitstable with damage to
many homes. Problems arose across East Kent and KCC had difficulty in
clearing debris from drains and Kent Labour is calling on Kent County
Council to clean out its highways drains more often and more

Selection of PPC under way
This September sees the re-start of the selection process interrupted
by the Deputy Leadership election There will be the opportunity for
members to meet aspiring candidates and for Branches to make.
up to three nominations. In October there will be hustings meetings in
Branches and a prospective candidate chosen by one member-one Vote.
